A man has been apprehended and fined €600 ($671) after mistaking a plane door for a toilet door during a flight from Edinburgh to Amsterdam. The man identified as James Gray has been slammed with a five-year ban from flying with KLM airline for attempting to open the plane door mid-flight at 30,000 feet, UK Telegraph reports.

Gray was placed in a detention centre overnight as soon as the flight landed at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, where he was fined. He didn’t realise he was also banned from the airline until he attempted to fly back home and staff refused to let him get on the plane.
He said:
"The crew told me to stay in my seat and I was to be arrested when the plane landed. I tried to explain it was a simple mistake. It was a misunderstanding. The police came and arrested me. They weren’t too friendly."

Gray had to phone a friend to lend him money in order to pay for a flight back home with a different airline.

According to him:
"I was charged and fined €600. I only had €750 with me so I had to borrow money for the rest of the stay over there."

When asked about the alleged door opening, Gray said he wouldn’t open a plane door on purpose and claims he only touched the handle.

He added:
"I realise the danger of that sort of thing."
