Aisha Buhari To Host Summit In New York

Nigeria’s First Lady, Aisha Buhari, will host a summit titled: “Bringing resilience and stability to Nigeria: A long-term strategy to improve Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health and Nutrition”. The Leadership reports that the summit is a side event of the ongoing 70th Session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly. It will be held on Wednesday, September 30, in New York.

According to Niyi Ojuolape, the special assistant to Babatunde Osotimehin, the executive director of the United Nations Populations Fund, Mrs Buhari will focus on current challenges and barriers that females face in Nigeria and implications on maternal and child health in particular.

Ojuolape noted that the summit would convene international organizations, government, as well as public-private stakeholders on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

The special assistant stressed that the event would also give an opportunity for the international community to identify ways to complement and support Mrs Buhari’s vision for improving the lives of women and children in Nigeria.
Speakers for the summit are include Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, Phumzile Mlambo Ngueka, executive director of United Nations Entity for gender equality and the empowerment of women, and Zainab Bangura, special representative of the UN secretary general on sexual violence and conflict.
Others are Amina. J. Mohammed, special advisor of the secretary general on Post-2015 planning, and Zouera Youssoufou, CEO Dangote Foundation.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari, who addressed world leaders at the 70th UN Assembly a few days ago,  promised that his government would address the problem of capital flight and oil theft which have seriously affected the Nigerian economy.\

Today, September 28, the president again addressed the international community at the session of the UN General Assembly.
In his 15-minute speech the Nigerian leader spoke about Boko Haram insurgency which he insisted has nothing to do with Islam; he noted that bringing peace to Nigerians was number one goal for the new government.
